Nails and Other Services
At the time of consultation you may also like to get one of the following treatment add-ons for your fur baby.
We can trim your pet’s nails. When booking a consult select the option from the add-on menu. Prices are dependent on degree of ease. Pet’s that struggle or are fearful may require sedation/calmative. We may need to reschedule in some cases.
Your pet may seem difficult if they are scared of getting their nails trimmed. There are a number of reasons that your pet may be stressed. They may have had a bad experience where their nails were clipped too far and caused pain, aren’t used to their feet being touched or may be anxious.
For stressed nervous pets we can work with them to help reduce fear involved with the nail clipping process over a period of time slowly increasing the time we touch and clip the nails. We may recommend referral to a behavioural veterinarian or behavioural trainer to help them overcome their fear.
Your pet (less common for cats) may suffer from anal gland blockage. If the glands remain blocked they enlarge and can become infected and finally abscess.
If your pet is scooting on or licking excessively at their bottom they may have blocked anal glands. There are many different possible causes for anal gland blockage and anything that causes inflammation to the area may lead to a blockage and subsequent swelling of the anal sacs.
Expressing the glands when they are impacted reduces the risk of the glands progressing to an abscess and provides relief for your pet. Some pets may require regular anal gland expression if they suffer regular blockage.
When booking a consultation select the option from the add-on menu. Treatment generally consists of gently massaging each gland until all the material in the gland is expressed.
Please be aware anal gland expression is for blocked uninfected (and non-abscessed) glands. If the anal glands have become infected we may be unable to express one or both of them and medication or further treatment may be necessary.
